Informational Text Downloads Free

The first grades in my school are beginning a large unit using the CCSS for informational text standards.  Over the holiday I have been looking around the Internet (mostly Pintrest!).  I decided to create the worksheet below for my students to use.  I believe I can use this throughout the entire unit.  The students will be check-marking the features they find in their books and the books we read together.  I am going to shrink this down on the school copier and have them use this in their writing journals. They can paste it in their informational text journal.  We can fill it out together, in my small intervention groups, guided reading or they can do it themselves during their writing workstation.
We have 2 composition notebooks we use in my classroom.  One is for their poetry journal and then they flip the book over and upside down and we use the other side as their formal 4 Square writing journal.  (This is the format we use for writing at our school.)  I introduced a separate journal for their free writing and prompt writing during workstation time.  When we return to school this week I am going to have them flip this journal over and upside down and start an informational text journal section.
I know the boys especially will love this.  I plan to allow them to respond to any informational text they have been reading in this journal during our writing station time.  They can write their own 4 Square stories in it, draw and label anything having to do with informational text, create maps, diagrams, bullet point lists, illustrated vocabulary etc. from their books.
When we do a formal study together I will have them use this sheet.  I think I will copy the front cover of the book and shrink it in size so they can glue it to their page where I left the space.  If they don't have the picture they can illustrate the cover themselves.  I will model how to take notes as I read the text to them.  I plan on letting them use single words at first and move on to phrases.  This is a big step for first graders to listen and write at the same time so I will be doing a lot of modeling.  I hope to use their notes and the text to write a whole group, class research paper.  They eventually will write their own research paper as the unit progresses.  I am excited to give this a try.  If you have any ideas or experience with this please feel free to share in the comments section.

Help My Classroom Get More Hits Please

At our class "Christmas Reading Party" the students chose their favorite poem from their poetry journal and recorded for our blog.  They were working on their fluency.  Would you mind clicking on the link below so that when they return to school our counter has quite a larger number then before we left?  Thanks in advance. Please feel free to leave the a comment.

My school has broken down what we teach into 3 week blocks of curriculum.  I am using the high frequency word videos below to teach the words for the 3 weeks.  I have my struggling reading students watch the video each morning on an ipad after they complete their morning routine.  They can come to me any morning before we start our day and try to "test out" if they can read all the words at the end of the movie without any help.  I was very pleased how this constant review worked for these students.

West Virginia's Next Generation Common Core State Standards Links

I participated in some training for West Virginia's Next Generation Common Core State Standards.  The team I was on wanted to share some helpful links and information with other first grade teachers.  Below are some of the things we felt would be helpful to our coworkers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WV Next Generation CSO's Search Page for ELA, Math, Social Studies

This quick video shows you how to find the  Nxt Gen Standards from the main state website.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Number Talk Dot Cards Download (Oceans of Fun Blog)
There is more on "Number Talks" on this site as well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thinkfinity
"Browse by Standard" search box for useful lessons and activities etc.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adventure to Fitness Web Site
This is fantastic website to get your students moving in your classroom.  It might be used as a "brain break" , extra weekly PE class or part of a teaching unit.  You owe it to yourself and your students to check out this resource more closely.  It really is excellent.

This video shows you how to find this resource on the state main website, about signing up and a trick for showing the video in your classroom so there is no "buffering" while showing the video to you class.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Learn 21 Links and  Videos (Math, Social Studies, Wellness, Art, Reading etc.)
On the top of the page click on our grade level.  This opens a tool bar below with subjects to choose resources to use in the classroom.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CCSS Math Resources

This site has first grade CCSS resources organized by the differnt standards.  They also have a math journal for purchase if your curriculum doesn't have something like this available.  I have not purchased it as of yet.  I will be going to training on "Number Talks" and am waiting until after that to see if I want to purchase the math journal.  A kindergarten teacher from my school really finds this site useful since the implemented the CCSS last year.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And for the ladies in our training... :)

Trial of Animoto App

Animoto App
This is my sample trial of what I created with the Animoto App.  It is by no means a finished product.

I have used Animoto online to create my end-of-the-year slideshows for my students.  I have a free "educators account"  that you can get at http://www.animoto.com/ .  This is my first attempt using it on my ipad as an app.  These are random picutres from my daughter's wedding.  I just had a few of them on this ipad and threw them together with one of the templates provided in the app so this is just a sample.  I used music off my ipad and then the app had a place to create a video to embed into the show.  I grabbed a photo I had at hand and that is the video you see at the end of the slideshow.  You can only shoot for 10 secs using that function of the app.  I wonder if I had a longer video already created if it would import that into the slideshow?  I will have to try that at a later date.  You can share your creations via Facebook, Twitter, Email a link or text a link.  You can also download the video to the ipad by saving it to your camera roll.  I took me all of 4 minutes to do this.  I know I will use this in the classroom this year.  Please do not repost the video anywhere.  Thank you.

Trial Run with Educreations App

Please remember this is a trial sample of something simple I created with Educreations.  You get to view it with all my "trial" errors! :)

I would use this app about the same way as ScreenChomp.  This one can have extra pages which would help the children with their their digital story creations.  It saves the video to a place in the cloud I can access and I have the ability to send and/or embed etc.  Easy to use.  As you can tell it paused the recording so I could edit the story and then return back to where I stopped.  I got cut off as soon as I hit the text button so next time I will wait until I tell what I am going to edit, hit "text" and then edit and return to the recording.

Trial with ScreenChomp App

Please remember these are just quick samples I created to try the product.  These are by no means a finished product.
There is lots of background noise on this one because the TV was on when I made this first sample.

I took a picture of a handwriting card I have in my classroom  (the picture can be taken inside the app.)and created this (trial) video for the student to listen to first and then they would go practice this by themselves.  I think I will do this at the beginning of the year.  My new first graders come in writing most of thier letters incorrectly. This would be a simple reteach starting the first week I get workstations up and running!  Just thinking about this idea.
(Opps, the "p" got cut off in ape.)

Possible Uses for ScreenChomp Off the Top of My Head
Small Group Targeted Instruction to Preview a Lesson
Small Group Targeted Instrution to Review or Reteach  a Lesson
Post on Blog for Parents to Preview What Will Be Taught and in What Fashion

Send to absent students via email, blog etc.
Have Students Collaborate and Create and Publish
Take Pictures of Student's Work and Have Them Narrate Meaning
Document Workstation Work Completed
Data Notebook Evidence of Mastery
Give Workstation Mini Lessons
Workstation Instructions
Students Create and Share
and .....

Please feel free to add your own ideas in the comments.  If you have used ScreenChomp please share with us what you have found to be useful in your teaching experice !

ipad Apps

I have downloaded many apps onto my ipad.  I am taking time this summer to review them  more carefully so they will be useful in my classroom.  We will be getting an ipad cart on each floor at our school.  I personally have 2 ipads that I will be able to keep in my room for daily use.  I am going to share some trials of what I create as I experiment.  All the samples will be rough but I thought my followers would like to get a quick glimpse of what I learn over the rest of the summer.  I also hope to be able to share what I learn with my coworkers when the new school year begins.  If you have ideas or great apps please share with me what they are and how you use them in the comments section.  I really don't want to just find and download great apps, I want to successfully use them to help educate my students in exciting new ways.
